Author: Gavin Lucas | Last Updated: November 2024The best Tennessee sports betting sites have sharp odds, great bonuses, and secure payouts. They make it easy for you to find interesting betting options on games featuring teams like the Tennessee Titans, Tennessee Volunteers, Memphis Grizzlies, and Nashville Predators.
Online sports betting is legal in the Volunteer State, but offshore sportsbooks tend to offer better odds, larger bonuses and more options than their local rivals. This guide highlights the top five sites for anyone interested in Tennessee sports betting, and we will also discuss the current legal situation in the state.
Our Top Sportsbooks
Tennessee Sports Betting OverviewTennessee Sports Betting Overview
Online sports betting is legal in Tennessee. The legislature approved House Bill 0001 in 2019, and Gov. Bill Lee allowed it to pass into law without his signature. The bill only covered online sports betting, so there are no land-based sportsbooks in the Volunteer State.
However, local Tennessee sportsbooks face high tax rates, which impedes their ability to offer competitive odds and large promos. They are also prohibited from offering college prop bets, politics betting, casino games, poker tournaments, and other popular wagering options. For that reason, many bettors in Tennessee still use the offshore gambling sites they were playing at before the local market began in 2019.
Type of Gambling Availability Reason Online Sports Betting Available Tennessee legalized online sports betting in 2019. Land-Based Sports Betting Unavailable There are no land-based sportsbooks or casinos in the Volunteer State. Daily Fantasy Sports Available The Tennessee Fantasy Sports Act legalized DFS contests in 2016. Horse Racing Available Pari-mutuel betting is legal in Tennessee,
although there are no racetracks or off-track parlors,
so online racebooks are your only option. What is the Gambling Age in Tennessee?
- You need to be 21 or older to bet on sports in Tennessee. That only applies to online sports betting, as there are no land-based sportsbooks in the state. Tennessee does not have any casinos either, so there is no official legal age for slots, table games, and poker. However, most offshore casino sites and poker sites require you to be 18 or older.
- Players aged 18 or older can also buy lottery tickets, bet on horse races or take part in fantasy sports contests in Tennessee. You also need to be 18 or older to play charity bingo, sweepstakes and raffles.

How We Evaluate Sports Betting Sites in Tennessee
You can check out our rating guide to learn more about our in-depth evaluation process, which focuses on software, customer service, promotions, mobile compatibility and more. We also focus on these four key areas when seeking the best Tennessee sports betting apps and websites:
Availability in Tennessee
We start out by making a list of online sportsbooks that are available in Tennessee. That includes local sportsbooks and offshore sports betting sites that actively welcome bettors in the Volunteer State.
Player Protections and Safety
Our experts then assess the security features at each sportsbook. We will not recommend any sites that offer poor player protection measures. They must deploy industry standard encryption and other security measures to protect customers’ data, and they should also have strong security records.
Odds Boosters and Competitive Lines on Tennessee Teams
- After identifying secure online sportsbooks that are readily available in Tennessee, we compare and contrast the odds at each site. Our experts assess the house edge (the juice or the vigorish) that each online sportsbook takes on its betting lines.
- We invariably find that offshore sportsbooks offer far better odds than their local rivals in Tennessee. It is easy to see why. They benefit from more favorable tax regimes, and it is cheaper to run a business in countries like Costa Rica, Panama, and Curaçao. The best sites will pass their cost savings onto their customers in the form of sharper odds, so it is difficult for the local sites to compete with experienced offshore sportsbooks like Bovada and BetUS.
Deposits and Withdrawals
- We then focus on the deposit and withdrawal options at each site. Our reviewers make deposits and request withdrawals, and they note the speed, ease and security of the process. They look out for sites offering instant deposits and same day withdrawals. The best sportsbooks also offer lots of trusted methods, such as Visa, MasterCard, online banking, wire transfers, Bitcoin, Ethereum and other blockchains.
- After considering each of those four categories, we narrowed our search down to the top five sites. BetUS, BetWhale, Bovada, SportsBetting.ag and Everygame excel in all the right areas for sports bettors in Tennessee, and they all hold trustworthy reputations, so we can confidently recommend those sportsbooks to our readers.

Yes, sports betting is legal in Tennessee. Lawmakers approved HB 0001, an online sports betting bill, in 2019. Gov. Bill Lee did not sign it, as he is opposed to gambling, but he allowed the bill to pass into law without his signature. HB 0001 did not cover land-based sports wagering. Local online sportsbooks launched in November 2020.
Online Sports Betting in Tennessee
Lawmakers passed a controversial bill, HB 1362, in April 2023. The bill means that local Tennessee sports betting apps must pay a 1.85% tax on their total handle. All other states impose a tax on online sportsbooks’ net revenue, whereas Tennessee taxes their gross income, regardless of whether they make a profit or swing to a loss each month.
That has made it difficult for local Tennessee sports betting sites to offer competitive odds. For that reason, many sports bettors in Tennessee use offshore gambling sites instead. Sites like BetUS, BetWhale and Bovada, which are based overseas, have significantly lower operating costs than local Tennessee sportsbooks, and they often pass on those savings to customers via sharper odds and larger bonuses than local TN sportsbooks.
Tennessee also prohibits local online sportsbooks from taking prop bets on college sports games. They cannot take bets on politics, entertainment or esports either, and they also cannot offer casino games, poker or fixed-odds bets on horse racing. Offshore sportsbooks like Bovada and SportsBetting.ag cover college props, politics, entertainment, casino games, poker and fixed-odds horse racing markets, so they are popular with Tennessee bettors.
Land-Based Sportsbooks in Tennessee
There are no land-based sportsbooks in the Volunteer State. In 2019, Tennessee became the first state to introduce an online-only regulated sports betting industry. All other states with regulated online sports wagering markets also permit in-person wagering.
However, there are no casinos in Tennessee. It does not permit commercial casinos, and there are no tribal casinos either, so there were no obvious places for physical sportsbooks to launch.
If you would like to bet on sports in-person, you can visit Kentucky, North Carolina, Arkansas, Virginia, or Mississippi. However, it is much easier to simply place bets online at an offshore online sportsbook in Tennessee.
Horse Racing in Tennessee
Tennessee legalized pari-mutuel betting on horse races via the Racing Control Act of 1987. However, there are no racetracks or off-track betting establishments in the Volunteer State.
Online racebooks are permitted to accept customers in Tennessee. Sites like SportsBetting.ag and Bovada offer pari-mutuel betting on hundreds of races every day, and they also take fixed-odds bets on big races.
Daily Fantasy Sports in Tennessee
Tennessee legalized DFS contests when former Gov. Bill Haslam signed the Fantasy Sports Act in 2016. DraftKings and FanDuel accept DFS players in the Volunteer State. However, apps like Underdog and PrizePicks cannot offer pick’em style contests in Tennessee.
Who Regulates Sports Betting in Tennessee?Who Regulates Sports Betting in Nebraska?
The Tennessee Sports Wagering Advisory Council regulates sports betting. The Tennessee Education Lottery initially regulated the market, but oversight was transferred to the Sports Wagering Advisory Council in 2022.
Tennessee’s Sports Betting Laws Compared to Neighboring StatesTennessee’s Sports Betting Laws Compared to Neighboring States
Kentucky, which shares the largest border with Tennessee, also has a regulated online sports betting market. There are also land-based sportsbooks in the Bluegrass State, whereas Tennessee does not have any physical sportsbooks.
Online sports betting is also legal in Arkansas, North Carolina and Virginia. However, the options are limited in Arkansas, so bettors in the Natural State often use offshore sports betting sites. Land-based sports betting is available in all three states too.
Mississippi permits in-person sports betting at casinos, but there are no regulated online sportsbooks in the state. Bettors in Mississippi must use trusted offshore gambling sites instead. Alabama, Georgia and Missouri have not legalized any forms of sports betting, so sites like BetUS, BetWhale and Bovada are popular in those states.
The Future of Online Sports Betting in TennesseeThe Future of Online Sports Betting in Tennessee
We cannot foresee any major changes to Tennessee’s online sports betting regulations in the future. While online sports betting is legal, the state imposes tough tax rates and multiple restrictions on Tennessee sports betting apps, which makes it difficult for them to compete with offshore rivals.
Gov. Bill Lee opposes sports betting, as do several prominent Tennessee lawmakers, so it is hard to see them relaxing the state’s strict rules any time soon. For that reason, we expect overseas gambling sites that accept Tennesseans to remain popular.
Responsible Gambling in Tennessee
It is important to gamble responsibly at Tennessee sports betting sites. That requires you to stick to a budget, take regular breaks, and generally enjoy Tennessee online sports betting in moderation. If you are gambling to excess, these sites can provide support:
- Tennessee Problem Gambling Treatment Services Program
- Gamblers Anonymous
- GamTalk
- National Council on Problem Gambling
- SAMHSA National Helpline
