VP Debate Odds and Prop Betting Picks
The upcoming VP debate between Tim Walz and JD Vance promises to be full of excitement. It is scheduled for Tuesday, October 1st, at 9:00 p.m. Eastern on CBS.
This free political betting guide will highlight the latest betting odds for the 2024 VP debate. I will discuss the current moneyline odds for the debate winner and tell you my favorite debate prop betting markets.
The following Tim Walz-JD Vance debate odds were provided by BetUS Sportsbook.
VP Debate 2024 Winner Odds
- Tim Walz (-240)
- J.D. Vance (+160)
Kamala Harris won her debate against Donald Trump, and Tim Walz is favored to make the Harris-Walz ticket 2-0 against Trump and JD Vance. Walz is the -240 favorite heading into the VP debate, and Vance is a +160 underdog.
The “winner” of the debate will be decided by the CBS affiliate poll after the debate or the average of the YouGov and Ipsos polls.
Tim Walz (-240)
BetUS has Tim Walz (-240) favored to win the upcoming VP debate 2024. Harris and Walz are favored in the current 2024 election odds. However, Walz still needs to be on the offense throughout the night as Democrats attempt to sway more undecided voters.
Democrats need a big night out of Walz, as this could be the last debate before the 2024 election. Trump has refused to commit to a second debate, and voters reportedly still want to know more about the Harris platform before they commit to voting for her.
JD Vance (+160)
Republican VP nominee JD Vance is the +160 underdog ahead of his televised debate with Tim Walz. Vance’s public speaking opportunities during the campaign so far have created several headaches for the GOP.
The Republican VP nominee is also at a disadvantage because Vance is less popular with voters than Walz. Many of Vance’s positions on hot-button issues, such as abortion, are also less popular with voters, decreasing his offs of performing well in the post-debate polls.
Tim Walz-JD Vance Debate Prediction
We have seen poor debate performances sink campaigns before, with the most recent example being Joe Biden’s re-election campaign-ending debate earlier this year. The VP debate is unlikely to have the same impact, but it is a great chance for either Walz or Vance to sway undecided voters in crucial swing states.
Walz is the favorite, and I think he will win the debate. He has the advantage of arguing for the more popular positions and is the more popular candidate. Vance, by contrast, is the least popular of the two and has to push the less popular positions.
- Prediction: Tim Walz -240
CBS VP Debate Prop Wagers
In addition to betting on the winner of the Walz-Vance debate, BetUS also offers outstanding prop wagers. There are dozens of wagers to choose from, including which phrases will be said, which candidate will address specific topics first, and specific actions by each candidate.
Words or Phrases to Be Said by Either Candidate
- Radical left (-200)
- Convicted felon (-200)
- Weird (-150)
- Insulin (+100)
- Childless cat lady/ladies (+200)
- Shutdown (+250)
- Opportunity economy (+300)
- Hillbilly Elegy (+300)
- Shut up (+400)
- Any curse word (+2500)
One of the best ways to prop bet on the VP debate is to wager on any of the words or phrases above to be said during the event. Either candidate can say the words or phrases above, and your bet will cash.
With the exception of Walz or Vance cursing, I think most if not all of the phrases above will be said. Vance seemingly says the “radical left” every time there is a microphone in front of him. Walz will undoubtedly try to get under Vance’s skin by calling him weird and reminding him about Trump’s criminal record.
Those options offer less value than other bets in this prop, though. You can bet on them and still win some money, but I think the options for “childless cat lady/ladies” (+200), “shutdown” (+250), and “opportunity economy” (+300) offer the best value in this VP debate betting market.
First Candidate to Say
BetUS also has options for which candidate will mention specific topics first. Here are some of the betting options in these 2024 VP debate markets.
Phrase | Tim Walz | JD Vance |
Artificial Intelligence (AI) | +100 | -140 |
Cat/Cats | -350 | +225 |
Gun/Guns | -150 | +110 |
Vance is favored to mention AI first (-140), but Walz is the favorite to talk about cats (-350) and guns (-150) during the debate.
I expect Vance to do his best to avoid talking about cats, but Walz should bring it up. Between the childless cat lady comments and the claims about Haitian immigrants eating cats in Ohio, cats will be discussed in the debate.
AI and guns are tougher topics to predict, and the odds are much closer for these subjects. Ultimately, I will stick with the favorites and pick Vance to discuss AI first (-140) and Walz to be the first to mention guns (-150).
First Phrase Said
- Donald Trump (-140) or Kamala Harris (+100)
- Communism/Communists (-280) or Fascism/Fascists (+185)
- Elon Musk (-240) or Peter Thiel (+160)
- Tax/Taxes on tips (-120) or Child Tax Credit (-120)
- Project 2025 (-240) or Weird (+160)
- Haitians (-240) or Cat ladies (+160)
Bettors can also wager on which phrases or words will be said first. Either candidate can mention these topics, and you win if you correctly predict which topic is mentioned first. For instance, if you bet on “Trump” being said first, you will win if the former President is mentioned before Vice President Kamala Harris.
My favorite bets for this market are for Communism to be said before Fascism and the Child Tax Credit to be mentioned before taxes on tips.
Trump, and by extension Vance, have been trying to associate Kamala Harris with Communism to stoke the fears their voters had when they were young 50 years ago. Walz, on the other hand, needs to push the Child Tax Credit as a success of the current administration and part of Harris’s agenda. The economy was one of the first topics in the presidential debate, and I think it will be discussed early again in the VP debate.
Tim Walz Debate Odds
- To wear glasses in the first 15 minutes (+300)
- To criticize Israel (+100)
- Say the 2020 election was stolen (+4000)
- Say “Mind your own damn business” (-300)
BetUS also offers odds on what specific actions or phrases each candidate will say during the debate. For instance, Walz is a -300 favorite to say the phrase “Mind your own damn business” during the debate. The phrase has been Walz’s response to the issue of abortion, a topic that will be discussed on Tuesday night.
I doubt Walz will say the 2020 election was stolen (+4000), unless he says it to describe Trump or Vance’s claims about the election. Also, given the delicate nature of the situation, I believe Walz will do his best to avoid discussing Israel, let alone criticizing the country.
I suggest betting on Walz wearing glass early in the debate (+300) and using the phrase “Mind your own damn business” at some point during the event.
JD Vance Debate Odds
- To say “Mamaw” (+400)
- To mention his book or movie (+300)
- Support a nationwide abortion ban (+750)
- Admit Trump is wrong about anything (+900)
- Admit Trump lost the 2020 election (+1000)
- To criticize Israel (+1000)
There are odds available specific to Vance as well. The most likely options in this market are for Vance to say “Mamaw” or mention his book-turned-movie, Hillbilly Elegy.
Two bets are easy to eliminate from this market. Vance will not admit that Trump is wrong about anything, especially the validity of the 2020 election. The 9-1 and 10-1 odds for these bets are enticing, but you will be wasting your money.
One of Vance’s most controversial stances that have impacted his favorability with voters is his public support of abortion ban. However, Vance has pulled back in public interviews, saying he would not support a nationwide ban. Abortion has been a topic in political debates for decades, and it will undoubtedly be discussed again in this debate.
Vance could try to avoid the question, but I expect Walz, and potentially the moderates, to press him for an answer. With that in mind, I think the best bets are for Vance to say “Mamaw” (+400), mention his book or movie (+300), and express support for a nationwide abortion ban (+750).
