US Open Betting Odds: Is Scheffler a Worthy Favorite?

World number one Scottie Scheffler is a heavy favorite in the latest US Open odds. The 27-year-old is currently ranked number one in the world and won his second Masters earlier this year. A win this weekend would be Scheffler’s first major win outside of Augusta, though.

This golf betting guide will break down the latest odds for the 2024 US Open. I will cover the betting odds for the top contenders and tell you my favorite prop bets at the top golf betting sites for this weekend.

2024 US Open Odds

Dozens of the best golfers in the world will compete in Pinehurst, North Carolina, this weekend at the 2024 US Open. Check out the table below for the current US Open betting odds, courtesy of BetUS Sportsbook.

Scottie Scheffler (+280)

World number one Scottie Scheffler is a huge favorite in North Carolina this weekend. He is listed at +280 to win the tournament and is the only participant with better than 10-1 odds.

Scheffler won the 2024 Masters, the second major win of his career and his second green jacket. Despite his recent dominance, Scheffler has never won a major outside of Augusta. He finished second at the US Open in 2022.

The talented golf star also made headlines last month when he was arrested at the 2024 PGA Championship. He was released and able to play in the event, but he finished tied for eighth.

Assuming he can avoid run-ins with the police in NC, Scheffler is practically guaranteed to finish in the top 10. He is a heavy favorite but still offers plus-money odds, making him a safe and profitable bet for this weekend.

Xander Schauffele (+1000)

The next closest competitor is Xander Schauffele, who is a distant second at +1000. Schauffele is coming off the first major win of his career at the PGA Championship in May. His best finish in the US Open came in 2019 when Schauffele came in third.

Winning back-to-back majors is easier said than done. On the other hand, if anyone can upset Scheffler this weekend, Schauffele is clearly the best bet. He is currently ranked second in the world and has been playing some of the best golf of his career recently.

Schauffele has historically played well in the US Open but struggled to finish the job. Since finishing third in 2019, he has only made the top five once. Schauffele has made the cut every year since his professional career started in 2017, though, and should be one of the last golfers standing in Pinehurst.

Rory McIlroy (+1050)

Rory McIlroy rounds out the top three at +1050. The Irish golfer has the best odds of any non-American to win the 2024 US Open. McIlroy finished 2023 ranked second in the world but is currently ranked third.

It has been nearly a decade since McIlroy’s last major win, The Open Championship in 2014. McIlroy won the US Open in 2011 but has struggled at the event since. He has missed the cut in four of the 12 US Opens since then.

McIlroy finished second last year, one of his two top finishes in this tournament in the last decade. On the bright side, he has finished in the top 10 each of the last five years. It is hard to trust McIlroy in majors, but he could return to glory with a win this weekend.

Collin Morikawa (+1350)

Up next is Colin Morikawa, who is listed at +1350 in the current US Open golf odds. He has the fourth-best odds, despite being ranked seventh in the current world rankings. Morikawa already has two major wins in his career, claiming vicotries at the PGA Championship and the Open Championship in 2020 and 2021, respectively.

He finished tied for fourth at the US Open in 2021, Morikawa’s best finish at this event in his career. Morikawa has also made the cut in four of his five appearances in the US Open. He has also finished in the top 15 each of the last three years.

Morikawa’s win at the Zozo Championship last year ended his 27-month PGA Tour winless streak. He has finished in the top four in both majors this season and has four top-five finishes in majors in the last three years.

Viktor Hovland (+1600)

Rounding out the top five is Viktor Hovland, who is listed at +1600 in the pre-tournament US Open odds. Hovland is currently ranked fifth in the world but is still searching for the first major win of his young career.

The US Open has historically been Hovland’s worst major. He has top-seven finishes in each of the other three majors, including a second-place finish at last year’s PGA Championship. However, Hovland’s best finish at the US Open came in 2019 when he tied for 12th place.

Hovland has never finished in the top 10 in the US Open and even missed the cut in 2022. On the bright side, Hovland has done better at non-major tournaments. For instance, he won the Hero World Challenge in 2021 and 2022, beating Scottie Scheffler both times.

2024 US Open Prediction

Scottie Scheffler (+280)is a worthy favorite in the pre-tournament US Open betting odds. However, I would bet against the world number one this weekend. Xander Schauffele, for instance, has been just as successful in majors this season and offers a significantly higher payout at +1000.

Prediction: Xander Schauffele wins the 2024 US Open (+1000)

2024 US Open Prop Bets

Betting on the outright winner is not the only way to wager on the 2024 US Open. Here are three of my favorite prop wagers for the US Open this year.

Nationality of Winner

  • USA (-175)
  • European (+220)
  • Rest of the World (+600)

One of the best props for the US Open every year is the wager on the winner’s nationality. Most of the top competitors in this year’s US Open are American. So, it comes as no surprise that the USA is the -175 favorite in the latest US Open odds for this wager.

Europeans have the next best odds at +220, with the rest of the world collectively listed at +600. There are many great European golfers in the field, including McIlroy and Hovland. However, I would stick with the Americans for this US Open prop bet.

Prediction: The winner of the US Open is from the USA (-175)

Group vs. the Field

Top sports betting sites also offer wagers that allow you to bet on a group of golfers against the field. These bets have lower payout odds, but you have the benefit of wagering on multiple golfers at once.

GroupingField Odds
Scheffler and McIlroy (+240)-335
Schauffele, Scheffler, and McIlroy (+175)-250
Schauffele, Morikawa, Scheffler, and McIlroy (+135)-190
Hovland, Schauffele, Morikawa, Scheffler, and McIlroy (+110)-150

The more golfers that you group together, the lower your payout odds. Of all of the options above, I like the trio of Schauffele, Scheffler, and McIlroy.  You get to wager on the top three favorites while maintaining plus-money US Open golf odds.

Prediction: Schauffele, Scheffler, or McIlroy defeat the field (+175)

To Miss the Cut

  • Tiger Woods (-315)
  • Robert MacIntyre (+110)
  • Dustin Johnson (+135)
  • Sepp Straka (+135)
  • Russell Henley (+135)
  • Sungjae Im (+135)
  • Scottie Scheffler (+1200)

You can also wager against golfers by betting on them to miss the cut at this year’s US Open. BetUS has Tiger Woods listed at -315 in this prop, making him the most likely person to miss the cut this weekend. Woods has struggled to finish tournaments in recent years, so it would not be surprising for him to miss the cut in Pinehurst.

Robert MacIntyre has the next-best odds at +110, just ahead of four golfers listed at +135. There are dozens of other options available, and the betting favorite to win, Scottie Scheffler, has the longest odds in this bet at +1200.

Prediction: Tiger Woods misses the cut at the 2024 US Open (-315)
