Jacksonville’s Doug Pederson was the favorite in the first NFL head coach fired odds after the team’s 0-4 start. Pederson is still employed, and Jets’ head coach Robert Saleh was fired in a shocking move by New York after the team’s Week 5 loss.

Saleh was the first coach fired, but plenty of coaches are still on the hot seat. Here are the odds for the next head coach to be fired in the NFL, courtesy of BetOnline Sportsbook.

Doug Pederson (Jaguars)-140+100

Zac Taylor (Bengals)+900+2500
Dennis Allen (Saints)+1600+1000

Doug Pederson (-140)

The Jaguars won their first game of the season in Week 5, beating the Colts to continue their home winning streak against Indianapolis. However, the Jags could not keep that momentum going and lost their Week 6 matchup to the Bears in London.

Jacksonville is back in London for Week 7 and will face the Patriots (1-5). If Pederson cannot beat New England, he may need to find different travel arrangements. Pederson was the +100 favorite to be the first coach fired, and he is listed at -140 to be the next head coach fired.

Saleh’s loss in London cost him his job. A second loss in the UK this season could lead to Pederson’s firing. Falling to 1-6 would also effectively eliminate the Jaguars from the playoffs.

Mike McCarthy (+400)

Dallas’s streak of winning at least 12 games every season is in jeopardy this season. The Cowboys (3-3) have been blown out in every home game this season, including their recent 47-9 loss at home to the Lions.

The poor start has also put head coach Mike McCarthy’s job security in question. McCarthy was listed at +600 to be the first coach fired, and he is now available at +400 to be the next coach fired.

I doubt McCarthy will be back next year, but I do not think he will be fired. McCarthy’s contract expires after this season, and Jerry Jones does not typically fire coaches midseason.

Kevin Stefanski (+550)

Another coach who has moved up the odds boards in the next coach fired markets is Kevin Stefanski. The Browns’ coach is the reigning Coach of the Year, and he has won the award twice in his tenure with Cleveland.

Stefanski’s odds of being the next coach fired have shortened from +1000 to +550 in recent weeks. Cleveland is just 1-5 to start the season, and the Browns offense has been unwatchable. Stefanski is an offensive coach and could be blamed for the team’s issues.

The real issue is not Stefanski’s offense; it is Deshaun Watson. Watson has been one of the worst quarterbacks in the league, but the team has continued to support Watson, at least publicly. Cleveland might fire Stefanski because of Watson, but I doubt it will be midseason.

Antonio Pierce (+600)

Las Vegas fired head coach Josh McDaniels eight games into the 2023 season. Antonio Pierce assumed interim coaching duties, and he was elevated to the official head coach for this season. Pierce was listed at +2000 to be the first coach fired, and he is now available at +600 to be the next coach fired.

The Raiders started the season 2-2, and their upset victory over the Ravens was one of the more shocking outcomes of the early part of the season. However, the Raiders are now 2-4 and recently traded away Davante Adams.

Pierce is running out of time to turn around the team, but I do not think he will be fired midseason. After all, team owner Mark Davis is still paying McDaniels, and I doubt he wants to pay a second coach to sit at home and not work.

Zac Taylor (+900)

The Bengals’ 2-4 start has them in danger of missing the playoffs. Their slow start has also put Zac Taylor in jeopardy of losing his job. A few weeks ago, Taylor was listed at +2500 to be the next coach fired, and he is now listed at +900.

Taylor’s position as the head coach is directly linked to the Bengals’ playoff hopes. If Cincinnati is eliminated from contention, I think Taylor will be fired. With a 17-game season, though, it takes longer for teams to be officially eliminated from the postseason.

Dennis Allen (+1600)

Rounding out the current odds for the next NFL coach fired is Dennis Allen. The Saints head coach was available at +1000 before Saleh was fired. Now, Allen is listed at +1600 to be the next head coach fired this season.

Allen and the Saints started 2-0 and had a historically excellent point differential. However, the Saints lost their next four games, and the starting quarterback, Derek Carr, suffered an oblique injury. Wide receivers Chris Olave (concussion) and Rashid Shaheed (knee) are also beat up.

Their injuries hurt the Saints’ chances of turning their season around, but they could save Allen’s job, for now. New Orleans needs a complete rebuild on offense, and it does not make sense to fire Allen when the season is all but lost due to their early-season injury luck.

  • Prediction: Doug Pederson -140

Original

Jaguars coach Doug Pederson is officially on the hot seat after the team’s 0-4 start, and he is currently the favorite in the latest first coach fired odds. The good news for Pederson is that he is not the only head coach struggling this season.

This football betting guide highlights the first head coach fired odds for the 2024 NFL season. I break down the current odds at the best NFL sportsbooks and give my predictions for which coach will be fired first this season.

First NFL Coach Fired Odds 2024

Here are the updated first coach fired odds, courtesy of Bovada Sportsbook.

Doug Pederson (+100)

Before the season, Jaguars’ owner Shad Khan called this year’s team the best in franchise history. Since then, Jacksonville has started 0-4, and the high preseason expectations only add to the pressure on Doug Pederson.

No coach who starts 0-4 can be confident in their job security, and Pederson is no exception. If you include last season, the Jaguars have lost nine of their last 10 regular season games. Their collapse last season cost them a spot in the playoffs.

If Pederson cannot turn the Jaguars’ season around, he will almost certainly be replaced. The bigger question is whether he will be fired mid-season and, if so, when.

Nick Sirianni (+600)

Nick Sirianni is another coach on the hot seat this season. Like Pederson and the Jaguars, Sirianni led the Eagles to a great start last season. However, Philadelphia fell apart in the second half of the season.

The Eagles did make the playoffs, but they were blown out by the Buccaneers. Many of the same issues from last season, including a blowout loss to Tampa Bay, have resurfaced this year. Philadelphia is 2-2, but they have a long way to go to live up to their Super Bowl expectations.

There is plenty of talent on Philadelphia’s roster, so finding a replacement for Sirianni would not be challenging. However, I doubt Philly will move on from Sirianni as long as the team has a chance to make the playoffs this season.

Mike McCarthy (+600)

Speaking of 2-2 teams in the NFC East, Mike McCarthy, the Cowboys’ head coach, is also listed at 6-1 odds to be the first head coach fired this season. Dallas has lost twice this season in embarrassing fashion. To make matters worse, their losses have all come at home.

McCarthy’s job will be even more difficult going forward with players on both sides of the ball, including Micah Parsons, already injured. Dallas also faces a tough schedule in the coming weeks, including games at Pittsburgh, against Detroit, and at San Francisco.

The silver lining for McCarthy is that Jerry Jones, the Cowboys owner, does not have a history of firing coaches mid-season. He is also in the last year of his contract, so Dallas can move on from McCarthy after this year if the team does not turn their season around.

Brian Daboll (+800)

Brian Daboll is the third NFC East coach to appear in the top four of the next head coach fired odds. Bovada has Daboll listed at +800 to be the first head coach fired this season.

The Giants made the playoffs in Daboll’s first season, but they finished 6-11 last season. Their poor performance has continued this year, and they are 1-3 through the first month of the season. The offense has looked better, though, and Daboll is doing the best anyone could with the talent on the roster.

New York was also featured on Hard Knocks in the spring, so it is no secret that they wanted to move on from quarterback Daniel Jones. Daboll could be safe for another year if the front office pins the team’s troubles on their QB instead of their head coach.

Robert Saleh (+900)

Questions have also been raised about the other NYC head coach. Jets’ coach Robert Saleh is listed just behind Daboll at +900 in the updated NFL first coach fired odds 2024. Saleh has led the Jets to a 2-2 start this season, but his relationship with quarterback Aaron Rodgers is the more significant concern.

Rodgers and Saleh have butted heads on multiple occasions during their short time together. Winning could help diffuse much of the tension currently surrounding the Jets. However, that is easier said than done, given their upcoming schedule.

New York takes on Minnesota (4-0) this week at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. The Jets opted not to have a bye after their trip across the bond, and they will host the Bills in Week 6. After facing Buffalo, the Jets have to play the Steelers and Patriots before finishing October against the Texans on Halloween.

The Jets have already beaten New England once this year and should beat them again. However, they could easily lose their matchups in October. Saleh could be out of a job if New York is not above .500 by the end of the month.

Dennis Allen (+1000)

Two coaches are listed at 10-1 to be the first NFL coaches fired this season. The first is the Saints’ head coach, Dennis Allen. Allen’s job looked secure after the team started 2-0 by outscoring their opponents 91-29.

Despite the hot start, the Saints now sit at 2-2 and could fall below .500. New Orleans takes on the Chiefs (4-0) in Kansas City on Monday Night Football. The Saints are 18-20 under Allen, who took over the team ahead of the 2022 season.

New Orleans’ schedule the rest of the way does not do Allen any favors, either. They get to play another game against the Panthers and visit the Giants in early December. However, the Saints also have to play Washington (3-1), Green Bay (2-2), Falcons (3-2), and the Buccaneers (3-2), twice.

Kevin Stefanski (+1000)

Kevin Stefanski is the other coach listed at +1000 to be the first coach fired this year. Stefanski won Coach of the Year at the NFL Awards last season, and he also won it in 2020, his first year with the Browns. He is 38-33 as Cleveland’s coach, and the browns have made the playoffs twice with Stefanski at the helm.

Stefanski led the Browns to the postseason last year despite the team starting five different quarterbacks. His task this season is more challenging: finding a way to win with Deshaun Watson under center. Watson was 5-1 as a starter last season before a shoulder injury knocked him out for the year.

It is Watson’s third year in Cleveland, and he is 9-7 as a starter but has never started more than six games in a season for the Browns. If Stefanski can get serviceable play out of Watson, then Cleveland could make another playoff run. Otherwise, Cleveland’s front office could clear house after the year.

First Coach Fired Prediction

The season is only a month old, but several coaches are already on the hot seat. Doug Pederson (+100) has the shortest odds to be the first coach fired after the Jaguars’ 0-4 start. Jacksonville is the only team not to win a game this season and is a long shot to make the playoffs.

Pederson is listed at even money in this wager, but the next closest coaches are Nick Sirianni and Mike McCarthy. The NFC East rival coaches are both available at 6:1, making them distant seconds to Pederson.

Jacksonville’s schedule only gets more challenging in October and November. Based on their play so far, I doubt that Pederson will make it to Thanksgiving as the team’s head coach.

The Jaguars are not the only bad team in the league, but he does not have the excuses of other coaches of bad teams. He has plenty of coaching experience and has spent over two years establishing his culture in Jacksonville. With that in mind, I think Pederson will be fired sooner rather than later and is destined to be the first coach fired this year.
