Top Contenders for the 2024-25 Hart Trophy
There is a clear favorite in the Hart Trophy odds to start the season. Oilers’ star center Connor McDavid is the +145, with Nathan MacKinnon (+625) a distant second. Auston Matthews (+800), Nikita Kucherov (+1200), and Jack Hughes (+1300) round out the top five.
Connor McDavid (+145)
The Edmonton Oilers lost a heartbreaking game seven in the Stanley Cup Finals last year to the Florida Panthers. Edmonton came up one game short of a championship, but they are ready for another shot at glory this year, thanks in large part to Connor McDavid.
McDavid has already won the Hart Trophy three times in his career. Bovada has him listed as the +145 favorite to win it again this year. McDavid was third in points last season with 132 points, but he only scored 32 goals himself.
Although he did not win the award last year, McDavid finished in the top three for Hart Trophy voting last season. His average season is Hart Trophy-worthy, making McDavid a great bet to win the award this season.
Nathan MacKinnon (+625)
Colorado Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon won his first Hart Trophy last season. The 2013 first-overall pick was second in scoring, finishing the regular season with 140 points. MacKinnon was also tied with McDavid for the sixth-best plus/minus at +35.
In addition to winning the Hart Trophy, MacKinnon was awarded the Ted Lindsay Award by the NHL Players’ Association. MacKinnon was the sixth consecutive player to win both awards in the same season but the second Avalanche player to win both in one year.
Assuming he stays healthy, MacKinnon should have another great season this year. However, recent history suggests he is unlikely to win another Hart Trophy this season. No one has won the award in back-to-back seasons since Alex Ovechkin in 2008 and 2009.
Auston Matthews (+800)
Another former winner looking to add another Hart Trophy to his trophy case is Auston Matthews. The Toronto Maple Leafs center won the award in 2022. Matthews accounted for 107 points last year, including a league-high 69 goals, and had a plus/minus of +31 in 81 games.
Top-ranked sportsbooks have Matthews listed at +800 in this season’s Hart Trophy betting odds. Matthews finished fourth in Hart Trophy voting last year, and his two first-place votes were one more than McDavid’s. Matthews also received 33 second-place votes compared to McDavid’s 28.
Toronto’s star center will need a lot more than just two first-place votes if he wants to beat McDavid for the Hart Trophy this year. Matthews scored a league-high 60 goals in his MVP season three years ago, and he will need another high-scoring season to have a shot at the award this year.
Nikita Kucherov (+1200)
Nikita Kucherov has the best Hart Trophy odds of any non-center. The Tampa Bay Lightning star is listed at +1200 to win the award this season. He is also the last non-center to win the award, taking home MVP honors in the 2018-2019 season.
Kucherov is in his 11th season, but his skills as a passer have never been better. He led the NHL last season with 100 assists and 144 points. Both were career-best marks for Kucherov, and he won the Art Ross Trophy for his efforts.
Despite his high-scoring season, Kucherov came up just short in the Hart Trophy voting last season. Kucherov was the runner-up after receiving 50 first-place votes and was the only player other than MacKinnon (137) with double-digit first-place votes. If he leads the league in scoring and assists again, it will be challenging for voters to deny Kucherov his second Hart Memorial Trophy.
Jack Hughes (+1300)
New Jersey Devils’ center Jack Hughes has the best odds of any player to win their first MVP this season. The 23-year-old is available at +1300 in the early season Hart Trophy betting odds.
Hughes must take a significant leap in year six to be a true MVP contender. He was second in points last year before a shoulder injury required season-ending surgery in April. Before the injury, Hughes was on pace for a career-best in points and assists.
He had 47 assists and 74 points in the 62 games Hughes played last year. If Hughes can build off last season’s success and stay healthy for the whole year, he could make a run toward his first MVP in the NHL.
Dark Horses and Underdog Picks
The five players above are all great bets to win the Hart Memorial Trophy this season. Bovada has exciting odds on dark horses as well. Here are three Hart Trophy winner sleepers to consider based on the latest odds.
Kirill Kaprizov (+2000)
Former Calder Trophy winner Kirill Kaprizov is in his fifth season with the Minnesota Wild. He finished seventh in Hart Trophy voting his sophomore season, but Kaprizov has struggled to reach the same heights since. If he can stay healthy and recreate the magic from his second season, Kaprizov (+2000) will be a contender for the MVP this year.
Connor Bedard (+3300)
Speaking of young superstars, Connor Bedard won the Calder Memorial Trophy last season in his first year with the Chicago Blackhawks. Bedard is listed at +3300 to win the MVP in year two. He will need to improve his plus/minus and overcome the lack of talent around him, but Bedard is a great sleeper to win the Hart Trophy this season.
Matthew Tkachuk (+4000)
The Florida Panthers will have a target on their backs this season as they attempt to repeat as Stanley Cup champions. Florida needs players like Matthew Tkachuk (+4000) to be at their best to have a chance to win back-to-back championships. Tkachuk finished third in MVP voting in the 2022-2023 season and could be a dark horse for the award this season.
Hart Trophy Predictions & Best Bets
Connor McDavid (+145) is the betting favorite to win MVP this season. McDavid is a perennial contender for the Hart Trophy, but I do not think he will win the MVP this season.
Nikita Kucherov (+1200) led the NHL in scoring and assists last season, but he only finished second in MVP voting. I think Kucherov will have a repeat performance this year, ranking among the best in scoring and assists. Another high-scoring season will force voters to name Kucherov the MVP for the second time in his career.

Whose NHL Hart Trophy Odds Will You Bet On?
Connor McDavid (+145), Nathan MacKinnon (+625), and Auston Matthews (+800) all rank at the top of the early season Hart Trophy odds. All three are good bets, but I think Nikita Kucherov (+1200), last season’s Ross Trophy winner, is the best bet for MVP this season.
