Oklahoma City is the +240 favorite to win their first NBA title since the Supersonics relocated to the Sooner State. Boston, the defending champions, is a close second at +250.
Cleveland has the best record in the NBA at 35-6, but the Cavaliers only have the third-best title odds at +600. The Knicks and the Nuggets round out the top five at 12-1 and 16-1 odds, respectively. Dallas, which won the West last season, is sixth at +1800 odds to win the NBA championship this year.
Oklahoma City Thunder (+240)
The Thunder have sprinted out to a 35-7 record through the first half of the season, 6.5 games ahead of anyone else in the Western Conference. OKC was the number one seed last year, and they are on track to earn home-court advantage again this season. They have only lost twice at home this season, so having home court throughout the playoffs would be a huge advantage.
Their lack of playoff experience cost the Thunder last season when they matched up with Dallas in round two. Dallas is currently the seventh seed and would be in the play-in, so we could get a Thunder-Mavericks rematch in round one.
Ultimately, OKC’s title chance will fall on the shoulders of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who is tied for the most points per game this year at 31.5. SGA also leads the team in assists (6.1 APG), steals (2.1 SPG), and blocks (1.1 BPG).
Boston Celtics (+250)
Boston has the best title odds in the East, and the second-best overall, at +250. The Celtics won the title last season, beating the Dallas Mavericks in five games. Boston finished their championship run last year with a 16-3 record and did not have a single playoff series that exceeded five games.
The Celtics are averaging 117.5 PPG, which is the fourth-most in the league. Boston leads the NBA in three-point attempts, averaging 49.1 3PA per game. However, they are only 15th in three-point percentage, 36.2%, and an old shooting streak could derail the Celtics season come playoff time.
Boston is 29-13 through the first half of the season, second to the Cavaliers in the East. Their playoff and championship experience would likely give the Celtics the edge over Cleveland in a potential postseason matchup. Boston also beat the Cavaliers in five games in the Conference Semifinals last year.
Cleveland Cavaliers (+600)
Speaking of the Cavaliers, they are listed at 6-1 odds to win their first NBA Championship since LeBron’s 2016 title run. The Cavaliers have the best record in the league at 35-6, 6.5 games ahead of the Celtics for the top spot in the East. Cleveland is also 20-2 at home this season, so having home court in the playoffs would be a significant advantage for the Cavs.
Donovan Mitchell leads the team in scoring with 23.1 PPG this season, but five other Cavs players are also averaging double digits this year. Mitchell also leads the team in steals (1.4 SPG) this season. Jarrett Allen leads the team with 10.0 rebounds per game, tied for the 14th-most in the NBA.
The biggest hurdle for the Cavaliers is their lack of playoff success. None of Cleveland’s starters have made it past the second round in the postseason. Their lack of experience could cost the Cavs in the postseason.
New York Knicks (+1200)
Rounding out the top three in the East are the New York Knicks, who are listed at +1200 odds to win their first NBA title since 1973. At 27-16, the Knicks have the third-best record in the East and are only 2.5 games behind the Celtics. However, New York is 0-2 so far against Cleveland and Boston this year.
The good news for the Knicks is they will have three more chances against both the Cavaliers and the Celtics. They are also 12-6 in their last 18 games, including a nine-game winning streak.
Jalen Brunson and offseason acquisition Karl-Anthony Towns lead the team in scoring with 26.0 and 25.4 PPG, respectively. Brunson also leads the team in assists with 7.4 APG, while KAT is the team leader in rounds with 13.9 RPG, second-most in the NBA. The Knicks are fifth in three-point percentage at 37.8% but only 25th in attempts at 35.2 three-point attempts per game.
Denver Nuggets (+1600)
Denver, which won the title in 2023, has the fifth-best NBA championship odds at +1600. The Nuggets’ title hopes hinge on three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic. Jokic leads the team in the following categories:
- 30.1 PPG (3rd in NBA)
- 13.2 RPG (3rd in NBA)
- 9.9 APG (2nd in NBA)
- 1.8 SPG (T-4th in the NBA)
There is no denying Jokic’s greatness, but the rest of the team needs to step it up for the Nuggets to have a realistic chance at the title. If Jamal Murray and the rest of the Nuggets roster fall flat again, it will be another early exit from the playoffs for Denver.
The most significant change Denver made this offseason was acquiring Russell Westbrook. He is averaging 13.1 PPG off the bench, the sixth-most on the team. Westbrook has a long history of playoff failures, though, so Denver may be unable to count on him come the postseason.
