Plants VS Zombies Slots

Imagine sitting in your suburban home one morning, when
suddenly you’re alerted to trouble by the screams of your
neighbors. You stick your head outside to see what’s going on,
and you’re shocked to witness a pack of hungry zombies shambling
across the street towards your house. With no weapons to speak
of, how can you hope to fend off these resurrected beings who
want to devour your brains? One word: plants.

That’s the premise of Plants vs Zombies, a popular 2009 video
game that debuted on Windows and soon spread to a number of
other platforms. You play a brave homeowner caught in the middle
of the zombie apocalypse, and your only defense against waves of
undead are the various plants in your front yard.

Due to the success of the game, designers PopCap Games
decided to license it for additional revenue, and they hired
Blueprint Gaming to convert it into a slot machine. This is how
the Plants vs Zombies slots were born, and the details of the
game are discussed below.

Game Rules

The following rules are in effect when you play the slot
machine adaptation of the game:

  • Line wins are multiplied by the value bet of the winning
    line.
  • If there are wins across different lines, they are added
together to determine the player’s total payout.
  • If multiple wins occur on the same line, only the
    highest win is paid.
  • Line wins pay from left to right.
  • During a single spin, multiple scatter features can be
    won.
  • In addition to reel wins, scatter wins are also paid
    during a spin.
  • When free spins are triggered, they’re played with the
same bet and active lines as the triggering base game.
  • All pays and plays are void in the case of a game
    malfunction.

Game Return to Player

The “game return” is the theoretical amount that the player
can expect to recoup over the long term. For example, a 97%
return indicates that the player should receive $0.97 for every
$1 risked.

Depending on which online casino you’re playing at, the
return for Plants vs Zombies ranges from 91.56% to 94.48%. While
the game is certainly entertaining, these percentages are
slightly less than what you can expect to find on a number of
Internet slots.

Cost of Play

The Plants vs Zombies slot has five reels and 20 paylines.
The player can choose to activate between one and 20 paylines
per spin, with the wager ranging from $0.01 to $10. This means
you can activate all lines and play for anywhere from $0.20 to
$200.

Plants vs Zombies Slot Pay Table

All slot machines have a pay table, which indicates the level
of payout for various combinations of symbols. Just because it’s
based on a computer game, the Plants vs Zombies slot from
Blueprint is no exception. As you play the game, the following
present the most consistent ways to achieve a payout.

Wild Zombie

This brain-craving member of the undead
serves as the wild symbol and looks like something out of
George Romero’s nightmares. It pays 2 for two symbols, 100
for three, 1,000 for four, and a massive 20,000 for five.
The wild substitutes for all symbols, with the exception of
the scatters.

Chompers

In the original game, these toothy plants can
devour an entire zombie. In the slot adaptation, they pay 40
for three symbols, 140 for four, and 300 for five.

Sunflowers & Peashooters

These are the earliest
obtainable plants in the original game. Peashooters blast
away at advancing zombies, while sunflowers generate sun
tokens that allow for additional plants to be powered and/or
purchased. In the slot version, both symbols pay 20 for
three matches, 100 for four, and 250 for five.

Plants vs Zombies Logo

The logo for the franchise
features a grey-skinned zombie flanked by various plants. It
is eligible to stack on all five reels. Pays 2 for two, 50
for three, 200 for four, and 500 for five.

Ace & King

As is the case with most slots, these
playing card symbols are thrown in to round out the list of
available icons. Pays 10 for three, 40 for four, and 200 for
five.

Queen, Jack, and 10

More playing card values. All of
these are worth the same amount, which includes 4 for three,
10 for four, and 100 for five.

Bonus Symbol

In order to activate one of the bonus
rounds, you’ll need to get this symbol on reels one and
three, as well as a bonus scatter on reel five.

Cherry Bomb Free Spins Scatter

Get bonus symbols on
reels one and three, as well as this scatter symbol on reel
five, in order to activate the Cherry Bomb Free Spins bonus.

Zombie Bonus Scatter

Get bonus symbols on reels one
and three, as well as this scatter symbol on reel five, in
order to activate the Zombie Bonus.

Zen Garden Bonus Scatter

Get bonus symbols on reels
one and three, as well as this scatter symbol on reel five,
in order to activate the Zen Garden Bonus.

Marigold Cash Prize Scatter

Get bonus symbols on reels
one and three, as well as this scatter symbol on reel five,
in order to activate the Marigold Cash Prize bonus.

Plants vs Zombie Bonus Rounds

The following four bonus rounds are available for this
Blueprint Gaming slot.

Cherry Bomb Free Spins

These spins are played out on a series of reels that differ
from the base game, with the special cherry bomb symbol
included. You’ll also notice a pack of zombies marching from
right to left at the base of the screen, dutifully moving
towards your house between each spin.

When cherry bomb symbols appear on the reels, they explode to
reveal other game icons. If three chili pepper symbols turn up,
then all zombies on the screen are destroyed. This continues
until zombies reach the door of your house and shamble inside.

Zombie Bonus

A number of vases appear on the screen, and the player is
asked to choose one. If a plant is revealed, then a cash prize
is won. If your in-game neighbor Crazy Dave is uncovered, the
screen switches to nighttime and allows the player to choose
among tombstones for additional prizes.

Another level-up is also available, allowing players to move
onto their roof and select from plant pots. If a gold trophy
jackpot symbol is uncovered on any level, the progressive
jackpot is paid out. If a zombie marked “Collect” is revealed,
then the round ends after the player’s winnings are added up.

Marigold Cash Prize

In this bonus round, the player is presented with a series of
watering cans. The objective is to select one of the cans, which
reveals either a flower or a zombie. If a flower is uncovered,
then the player gets to water the marigold and increase their
overall payout. If a zombie is revealed, then the player’s
winnings are added up and the bonus round comes to an end.

The player can also win the progressive jackpot by uncovering
the appropriate symbol.

Zen Garden Bonus

When this bonus is activated, the screen becomes filled with
plant pots. The player selects one of the pots and receives the
cash prize hidden beneath it. At this point, the player has two
choices: take the available prize or choose another pot. The
round continues until the player has either selected a prize or
picked five pots.

Revealing the progressive jackpot symbol results in the
game’s largest payout for the player.

Plants vs Zombies Features

In addition to the bonus rounds, the Plants vs Zombies slot
has a couple of neat features that activate randomly during the
base game. Each begins when neighbor Crazy Dave, wearing a
cooking pot on head and mumbling like a madman, suddenly appears
on the screen.

Zombie Attack

Crazy Dave bursts onto the screen and shouts “Watch out…the
zombies are coming!” You’ll then be bombarded by a hoard of
undead, and their methods of movement include everything from
pogo sticks to rappelling down via ropes. As this occurs, they
turn various symbols wild, resulting in additional winning
combinations.

Gargantuar Attack

Crazy Dave appears and babbles “Watch out…the Gargantuar is
coming!” This is following by a massive zombie appearing on the
screen, wielding a telephone pole as a club and carrying a
smaller undead on his back in a makeshift papoose. As the
Gargantuar moves across the screen, he pauses to smash his
weapon against the ground, and this turns entire reels wild.
After he disappears, the player’s win total is added up and
awarded.

Progressive Jackpot

The progressive jackpot for the game can be won during any of
the bonus rounds. This is accomplished by revealing the
Progressive Jackpot bonus symbol, although the Cherry Bombs Free
Spins phase requires five golden trophy symbols to show up
during a single spin.

Four-percent of each wager goes into the progressive jackpot.
To date, the largest jackpot won on the game is $871,170.36,
which is a solid payout when you consider that the maximum wager
per spin is capped at $200.

Summary

Plants vs Zombies slots should be a big hit with anyone who
remembers the original games, and the designers at Blueprint
Gaming have added plenty of bonus rounds and features to keep
players entertained. The only downside is the payback
percentage, which is slightly below-average when compared to
some of the leading virtual slot machines.
