Blue Wall vs. Sun Belt vs. Swing States

If you have followed the upcoming election, you have likely heard much about swing states, Sun Belt States, and Blue Wall states in 2024. What are these states, and why are they so important in every presidential election?

Blue Wall States 2024

There are 18 states in the “Blue Wall,” but the most important ones this November are Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin. This trio of northern states will account for 44 electoral votes in this election, and the polling indicates a close race between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.

The Blue Wall is a series of primarily northern states that Democrats won every election from 1992 to 2012. That changed in 2016 when Trump won Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. President Joe Biden reclaimed these states in 2020, but Trump won one Maine vote.

Sun Belt States 2024

The Sun Belt states are, generally, geographically and politically opposite of the Blue Wall states. There are states in this group, all of which are, at least partially, located below the 36th parallel. California is geographically a Sun Belt State, but it is considered part of the Blue Wall.

Several Sun Belt states are potentially up for grabs this November, including:

  • Arizona
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • North Carolina
  • Nevada
  • Texas

Arizona, Georgia, and Nevada voted blue in 2020 and are considered swing states this year. The Harris campaign’s aggressive efforts have also put North Carolina, Nevada, and Texas in play this November.

Swing States

Several Blue Wall and Sun Belt states are also classified as swing states for the 2024 election. These states do not lean heavily toward Republicans or Democrats, so the candidate who wins these states will likely win the 2024 election.

There are seven states classified as swing states in 2024, including:

  • Arizona
  • Georgia
  • Michigan
  • Nevada
  • North Carolina
  • Pennsylvania
  • Wisconsin

Many of these states were swing states in 2020 as well. The exception is North Carolina, which has only voted blue once in the last 11 presidential elections. Aggressive Democratic campaigning in the Tar Heel State has made it winnable for Harris.

2024 Election Odds: Will There Be a Sweep?

You can wager on every state individually at BetUS and other secure political sportsbooks. BetUS also has pre-made election props that combine Blue Wall, Sun Belt, and swing states into their own wagers.

Blue Wall Sweep Odds

  • Democrats sweep “Blue Wall” states (+100)
  • Democrats do not sweep “Blue Wall” states (-140)
  • Republicans sweep “Blue Wall” states (+250)
  • Republicans do not sweep “Blue Wall” states (-400)

For this election prop from BetUS, either candidate would only need to win Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin to “sweep” the Blue States. Neither Harris nor Trump is favored to do so. However, Harris is the closest as a +115 underdog, while Trump is listed at +350 to win all three states.

Trump is certainly capable of winning all three of the necessary states for this wager. He did it in 2016, and all three states are in the “swing” state category. Trump is listed at +140 odds or better to win each state individually.

Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin are the three primary states from the Blue Wall that will be heavily contested this November. Here are the latest election odds for each state:

Blue Wall StateKamala Harris WinsDonald Trump Sr. Wins
Pennsylvania-130-110
Michigan-175+130
Wisconsin-175+130

Harris is the betting favorite in every state for this wager, though. The Democrats also won all three states in 2020, and Harris has been heavily campaigning in these critical states.

Sun Belt States Sweep Odds

  • Democrats sweep “Sun Belt” states (+700)
  • Democrats do not sweep “Sun Belt” states (-2000)
  • Republicans sweep “Sun Belt” states (+250)
  • Republicans do not sweep “Sun Belt” states (-400)

BetUS also has a 2024 election prop for one candidate to sweep the “Sun Belt” states. For this bet, either candidate would need to win all of the following states to complete the sweep:

  • Arizona
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Nevada
  • North Carolina
  • Texas

Here are the latest election odds for the six Sun Belt states expected to be close races this November.

Sun Belt StateKamala Harris WinsDonald Trump Wins
Arizona+110-150
Florida+350-600
Georgia+100-140
Nevada-135-105
North Carolina-110-130
Texas+500-900

Donald Trump Sr. is the betting favorite in five of these six states. The only exception is Nevada, where Harris is the -135 favorite over Trump (-105). North Carolina is also a state to keep an eye on with this bet, as Trump (-130) is only a slight favorite over Harris (-110).

Losing either North Carolina or Nevada would spoil Trump’s potential sweep of the Sun Belt. He is more likely to win those states and complete the sweep than Harris is to flip Texas and Florida in the same election. Both states have trended left in recent elections, but they are risky picks for this election prop.

Swing State Sweep Odds

  • Democrats sweep swing states (+300)
  • Democrats do not sweep swing states (-500)
  • Republicans sweep swing states (+425)
  • Republicans do not sweep swing states (-800)

Last but not least, BetUS also allows you to break up the Blue Wall and the Sun Belt to focus on the swing states. The specific states in question or this 2024 election prop are:

2024 Swing StateKamala Harris WinsDonald Trump Sr. Wins
Arizona+110-150
Georgia+100-140
Michigan-175+130
Nevada-135-105
North Carolina-110-130
Pennsylvania-130-110
Wisconsin-175+130

According to the oddsmakers, Harris (+300) has slightly better odds to sweep all seven swing states than Trump (+425) does. Neither is a favorite to do so and betting against a Harris sweep (-500) has slightly better payout odds than wagering against a Trump sweep (-800).

2024 Election Predictions

The election props above are all great ways to bet on the 2024 presidential race. Here are my predictions for these election betting markets.

Democrats Sweep “Blue Wall” States (+100)

Sweeping the three blue wall states is the easiest proposition of the props above. Either side would only need to win three states instead of six or seven. Kamala Harris and the Democrats are favored to win Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin individually and are listed at +100 to win all three this November.

Harris is moving toward being a heavy favorite in Wisconsin and Michigan, so the real question is whether she will win Pennsylvania. She is the favorite at -130, compared to Trump, who is available at -110. I believe Harris will win PA, and +100 odds are better than -130 payout odds, so I recommend taking this election prop before the odds shift more in Harris’s favor.

Republicans Do Not Sweep “Sun Belt” States (-400)

Completing a sweep of six Sun Belt states is a much taller task. Four of the six states in this bet are also swing states, and the odds for most of them are very close. With that in mind, I do not think that either Trump or Harris will sweep the Sun Belt states.

Of the two options for betting against a sweep, wagering against a GOP sweep (-400) offers better payout odds than betting against a sweep by Democrats (-2000). Considering that, I would bet against the Republicans in this 2024 election prop.

Democrats Do Not Sweep Swing States (-500)

I also do not believe either party will sweep the seven swing states this year. The biggest hurdle in this wager is North Carolina, which was not considered a swing state at this time last year. Democrats have campaigned heavily in the Tar Heel State to put it in play, but I doubt they will turn it blue this year.

Also, as I stated above, I predict that Harris will win Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan. If she wins any of those states, Trump will not be able to secure a sweep. Betting against Democrats securing a sweep (-500) has better odds than wagering against a GOP sweep (-800), so I suggest wagering against Harris in this prop.
