Presidential Debate Odds: Will Trump or Harris Win the ABC Debate?
The debate odds for the upcoming ABC presidential debate look much different than they did at the end of June. A big reason for the change in the betting odds is that President Joe Biden will no longer be part of the debate. Since taking over as the presumptive nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris has stolen much of the momentum away from the Trump campaign.
Harris is favored to win the debate against Trump on ABC in September. However, as we have seen, a lot can change in the weeks leading up to the debate. Keep reading to see the latest presidential debate odds at the top political betting sites.
When Is the Next Presidential Debate?
First things first, are Harris and Trump going to debate? After weeks of speculation, Trump finally agreed to debate Vice President Harris. In fact, there could be multiple debates in the coming weeks.
Earlier this month, Trump claimed there would be three presidential debates. According to the former president, he and Harris would debate on the following dates:
- September 4th on FOX
- September 10th on ABC
- September 25th on NBC
The September 10th debate has been in place for months and was originally supposed to feature President Biden. After Biden dropped out of the race, though, Trump tried to back out of the debate.
Harris has pushed to keep the ABC debate on the schedule, and it appears she will be getting her wish. However, the other debates announced by Trump are on the back burner for now. According to The Hill, Harris is open to debating Trump again, but not until October and only if he “shows up” to the debate on ABC.
The vice presidential debate has also been confirmed. After weeks of speculation, JD Vance finally agreed to debate Tim Walz on October 1st.
ABC Presidential Debate Odds
The September 10th debate is the only presidential debate between Trump and Harris that has officially been confirmed. Sites like BetOnline Sportsbook offer exciting odds for the ABC debate. For instance, you can wager on the winner of the debate and whether the candidates will shake hands.
BetOnline has Harris as the -250 favorite to win the debate against Trump (+170). The “winner” will be determined by the post-debate ABC affiliate poll or by YouGov or Ipsos if ABC does not conduct its own poll.
Kamala Harris Wins the Debate (-250)
Kamala Harris will have an experience disadvantage in her debate against Trump. This is Trump’s third presidential campaign and his second debate of the year. Trump also is not held to the same standard as other politicians and often gets away with refusing to answer direct questions or outright lying.
Despite those challenges, Harris is still a moderate favorite over Trump ahead of the September 10th debate. She performed well against Mike Pence in their 2020 VP debate, with many saying Harris beat Pence in the debate.
Harris also has years of experience as a prosecutor, which should help her in the debate itself. Since Biden will not be there to distract viewers, more pressure will also be on Trump this time around.
Debating Trump can be challenging, though, and Harris will have to be careful to stay on message. In previous debates, Trump has frequently made personal attacks against his opponents rather than discuss policy.
Donald Trump Wins the Debate (+170)
The last month could not have gone much worse for Donald Trump and his presidential campaign. He entered July with a lot of momentum after a relatively successful debate against President Biden. Other than Grindr crashing during the RNC, everything seemed to break Trump and the GOP’s way.
Since Biden stepped down, though, the Trump campaign has lost a lot of steam. Trump was a -300 favorite to beat Biden in the 2024 election heading into the RNC, and he is now an underdog to Harris this November.
Trump is also the +170 underdog heading into the September 10th debate against Harris. Winning the debate could help Trump turn around his campaign, which has been struggling since Harris became the presumptive nominee.
On the other hand, Harris could be Trump’s toughest opponent in a presidential debate. Trump has also struggled with his rally speeches over the last month and still frequently focuses on Biden instead of discussing Harris. A poor debate could put the nail in Trump’s campaign’s coffin.
Will Trump and Harris Shake Hands?
- Yes (+300)
- No (-500)
In addition to offering debate odds on the winner, BetOnline also has prop bets for the event. For example, you can wager on whether Harris and Trump will shake hands at the debate. The opponents are listed at -500 not to shake hands before the debate on September 10th.
Biden and Trump did not shake hands before their debate in June. Given the animosity between the two, it was not surprising for Trump and Biden to skip the traditional pre-debate handshake.
ABC Presidential Debate Predictions
Donald Trump and Kamala Harris will have their first debate on September 10th. The much-anticipated debate could have a major influence on the outcome of this November’s election.
We do not yet know the rules for the debate, so the moderators, potential to mute mics, and live fact-checking options are all wild cards. Despite the unknowns, I still think that Harris is the best bet to win the ABC debate. Her experience as a prosecutor should help her answer questions clearly and keep Trump on topic.
I also do not think Harris and Trump will shake hands before the debate. Attacks from both sides have quickly turned personal, and I think Harris and Trump will opt to skip the customary pre-debate handshake.
- No Harris-Trump handshake -500
- Harris wins debate -250
